Our Foster Care Program is one of our key projects. Fostering allows our animals to live in comfortable foster homes rather than in the shelter while they are awaiting their forever home, but also provides people with the opportunity to enjoy having a pet without the long term responsibility or financial commitment. While they are in your care, you will get to experience the wonderful aspects of having a pet whilst providing them with a loving short-term home. A bit about the program:
- Supplies are provided (food, kitty litter, bowls, beds etc)
- All veterinary care is provided at our Strathfield South clinic
- Animals require a foster home for differing lengths of time; anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months
- Foster carers will be asked to bring the animal to our facility as needed for vet treatment and adoption meetings
- Foster carers are responsible for all day-to-day care of the animals, but the SDCH team are available every day for support and assistance
A note on dog fostering: we are in particular need of foster carers for large dogs! The ideal foster home is one where there are no other pets, where someone is at home often and where the family has some experience caring for dogs. Applications for small dogs or homes which do not meet the outline above will certainly be considered, but we may not always have a foster animal suited to your requirements.
A note on cat fostering: winter is quiet time for cat fostering as we have fewer cats coming into the shelter. We have currently closed applications for cat fostering but will be advertising for carers in November when summer, and kitten season, begins! We appreciate your interest and please do reapply in November.
A note on rabbit fostering: here at SDCH we believe bunnies are part of the family! We love our bunnies to be housed in a secure home where they have space to roam and are given lots of love and attention; unfortunately we are not able to accommodate carers wishing to keep foster rabbits in a hutch.
