Anyone intending to adopt a companion animal from the Home should take note of our adoption requirements. Please:
* Leave yourself plenty of time. It can take up 1 – 2 hours to choose an appropriate pet for your circumstances and to complete the necessary paperwork.
* Have proof of identity that you are 18 years and over.
* Bring all the members of your household to meet the pet, particularly young children and other dogs.
* If you have an existing pet please speak to our staff about appropriate ways to gradually introduce your existing pet(s) to your new pet to maximise the likelihood that they will live together harmoniously.
* Note we do not adopt out pets as presents or surprises without the recipient being present to meet and bond with the animal.
* Confirm you have your landlord’s permission to keep pets if living in rented premises.
* For some specific breeds of dog it will be essential that adopters have prior experience with that breed.
* To ensure that newly adopted cats develop a familiarity with their new home and they know where to return to if they do eventually go exploring, it is essential that newly-adopted cats and kittens are indoors-only for the first two months after their adoption, please ensure your household is able to commit to this.
* In general, it is a good idea for cats to be indoors-only in any case. Indoor cats on average live much longer than indoor/outdoor cats as they avoid the dangers and predators involved in being outdoors.
* We suggest that our kittens be adopted in pairs. If you’re interested in adopting one kitten (under 4 months of age), it is a good idea to have another young, playful, friendly cat or have someone in the family at home most of the day.
**Please note that secure fencing with no holes, gaps or escape routes is essential for all dog adoptions**
